President Tsai attends 2023 Presidential Hackathon Awards Ceremony

President Tsai Ing-wen lauded the winners of the 2023 Presidential Hackathon for their innovative proposals at an award ceremony Sept. 24 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

Tsai said the competition encourages interdisciplinary cooperation between experts in the public and private sectors and noted that, as a result of the hackathon, people have become more open to new approaches to complex problems. The sixth edition of the event saw a higher percentage of public agency participation than ever before, and many initiatives have already been implemented to enhance government efficiency.

This year’s hackathon had separate themes for the domestic and international competitions, but both touched on the importance of environmentalism. Domestic teams worked under the theme “Net Zero Emissions: Harmonizing Evolution,” because, as the president said, creative ideas such as those proposed by the winners will enable Taiwan to advance toward a sustainable low carbon environment.

Sixty teams, the most since the inception of the contest, participated in the international division by exhibiting projects on the theme of “Free the Future: Open, Digital and Green.” The winners not only displayed their concern for society but also embodied the spirit of digital democracy.

Launched in 2018, the hackathon is designed to encourage data stakeholders, data scientists and field experts to work together to accelerate the optimization of public services and propose open data solutions to deliver a better and more sustainable environment worldwide. (POC-E)
