President Lai Ching-te spoke at a press conference Nov. 7 in Taipei City to recognize Taiwan’s delegation departing for the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Meeting and express his confidence that the representatives would convey the country’s voice and perspectives to other APEC member economies.
Lai praised the delegation leader, Lin Hsin-i, noting his long experience in the public and private sectors. The president exhorted Lin and the rest of the group members to make Taiwan’s active contributions to the international community clear during the AELM scheduled for Nov. 15-16 in Lima, Peru.
Taiwan is also eager to cooperate with APEC partners to create a fairer and more inclusive international trade order, the president said, adding that the country intends to promote digital trade, along with artificial intelligence and digital medicine, fields in which it has a wealth of experience to impart.
In response, Lin said the delegation will keep with this year’s theme of Empower, Include, Grow by sharing Taiwan’s experiences in the economic empowerment of small- and medium-sized enterprises, as well as women, Indigenous peoples and economically disadvantaged groups. They will relate the country’s achievements in agricultural technology for reducing food loss and waste, and actions toward net-zero transition as well, he added.
Delegation members will also demonstrate how Taiwan can use its strengths in digital technology to contribute to APEC while advancing fair, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the Asia-Pacific, Lin said, adding that he will disseminate the message that Taiwan wants to contribute to the peaceful and stable development of the region while upholding the spirit of mutual assistance and reciprocity with the world.
According to the PO, Minister Liu Chin-ching of the National Development Council and Yang Jen-ni, minister without portfolio, will attend the APEC’s Annual Ministerial Meetings Nov. 14. (YCH-E)
