Dong Jyu Elementary School in outlying Lienchiang County’s Jinguang Township recently conducted a three-stage course on reusing marine waste and weaving, the MOE said. The course was under the auspices of the MOE Cross Disciplinary Aesthetic Education project and integrated math, biology and other subjects, to raise awareness of marine waste and its potential for use in art and crafts.
Students collected waste materials from a beach, including fishing nets and floats.
One section of the course taught basic weaving techniques. Students learned to design patterns and then made mats or coasters.
Through the process of collecting waste, cleaning it, designing patterns and weaving, students improved coordination and transformed items into practical objects for use in daily life.
In the final phase of the course, students and teachers shared observations on the environment and the creative processes, to deepen appreciation of recycling.
The MOE said that environmental issues are not just within the domain of natural science, but that through interdisciplinary aesthetic activities, students can gain insight into sustainability. (POC-E)
