Taiwan stages APEC dengue prevention conference

A conference on dengue prevention and control was held April 22-23 in the southern Taiwan city of Tainan to facilitate discussion between members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation on ways to employ innovative technology to address new challenges in the post-COVID-19 era.

Organized by Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the two-day event involved officials and experts from Taiwan and fellow APEC members Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the U.S.

According to the CDC, the opening of borders following the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with global warming and other environmental and social factors, led to a resurgence of the dengue fever pandemic, with 2024 seeing a record high of more than 14 million cases reported, along with a global death toll over 10,000.

With the aim of establishing a regional collaboration network, the conference featured several discussion sessions on topics spanning public-private partnerships, progress on dengue vaccines, the latest research in vector surveillance, and demonstrations of innovative real-time and integrated information models.

Another highlight of the conference was a site visit to to provide conferencegoers with a better understanding of how communities and authorities in Tainan have risen to the challenge.

The CDC said the conference has successfully strengthened APEC members’ epidemic and pandemic preparedness while also creating a platform for continuous exchanges to safeguard global public health. (SFC-E)
