The Ministry of Agriculture held an event related to Australian agricultural experience, April 29 in the southern county of Pingtung, highlighting government commitment to promoting a collaborative relationship that prioritizes local producers’ needs and increases the experience of domestic personnel to compete in international markets.
Organized by the MOA Department of International Affairs, the physical and virtual event brought over 130 academics, business representatives, experts and officials together. Sharing their observations during the event were delegation members to the 19th Taiwan-Australia Agricultural Meeting; and Evoke AG, an Asia Pacific premier agrifood innovation event, both held in February in Brisbane.
Highlights included topic discussions on international trends such as food and agriculture supply chain transparency and a case study on zero use of fossil fuel in farms. Participants further explored issues such as biosecurity management, cross-border agro-industrial cooperation, investment incentives and restrictions in the Australian market and the complementary nature of bilateral industries.
In addition, the MOA unveiled two international agricultural leadership training programs in the final session. In the first, the MOA will work with the U.K.-based nonprofit organization Nuffield International and other international partners to cultivate young agricultural personnel aged from 18-30 in a program that supports youth to travel overseas to learn about industry-related innovation and management.
A second program assists those aged over 30 to gain management expertise and play a key role in creating a bridge between Taiwan’s agricultural industry and world markets.
The MOA emphasized that Taiwan’s agriculture must move toward high-value and sustainable development to face global challenges such as climate change and intensified trade competition. Australia is a close partner and shares interest in areas spanning smart agriculture and sustainability, the MOA said, expressing anticipation of further strengthening bilateral strategic cooperation.
