Taiwan, Germany expand smart medicine cooperation

A Ministry of Health and Welfare delegation visited Germany in April to expand cooperation and exchanges on smart medical care and digital governance.

According to the MOHW, the group comprised officials from the Taipei Representative Office in Germany, German Institute Taipei, Hsinchu County-based Industrial Technology Research Institute and local startups.

The delegation discussed issues such as artificial intelligence legal frameworks, cross-border information exchanges, user consent mechanisms, electronic cigarette policies and cross-border pharmaceutical supervision and management at the European Health Data Space in Berlin.

Nick Schneider, head of new technologies and data use at the EHDS, commended Taiwan for balancing the need for privacy protection and technological innovation, saying that Taiwan’s experience served as a valuable policy reference. Schneider has accepted the MOHW’s invitation to visit Taiwan next year to explore expanded cooperation, the ministry said.

The delegation also attended the Digital Medical Expertise and Applications in Berlin, the largest digital health conference and trade fair of its kind in Europe.

During a session on digital health care in action, Shieh Jhy-wey, Taiwan’s representative in Germany, and Lee Chien-chang, director of the MOHW’s Department of Information Management, shared information about the government’s digital health policymaking and exchanged views with officials from Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands.

The ministry added that the panelists commented favorably on Taiwan’s smart medicine exports and praised its institutional governance and technological prowess. (SFC-E)
