Taiwan has been selected to host the International Council of Nurses’ 2027 Congress, marking a major milestone in the country’s global public health participation.
The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of this year’s ICN Congress June 13 in Helsinki. The 2027 edition is expected to draw over 5,000 professionals from more than 100 countries, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The Taipei City-based Taiwan Nurses Association filed the application to the ICN, the MOHW said.
TWNA President Liao Mei-nan expressed her gratitude to the ministry for its long-standing assistance following the announcement, citing MOHW Minister Chiu Tai-yuan’s remarks conveying Taiwan’s enthusiasm for hosting the congress while receiving ICN representatives Feb. 26.
The post-pandemic era has seen a global shortage of nurses, the MOHW said. To address this issue, President Lai Ching-te proposed 12 strategic plans, and Premier Cho Jung-tai allocated a four-year budget of NT$27.5 billion (US$94.5 million), the ministry added.
The MOHW has also been optimizing medical work environments and investing in educational resources to forge a more sustainable and supportive health care system, adding that the government’s measures received recognition from the ICN jury during the selection process.
The ministry concluded by voicing appreciation to TWNA for showcasing Taiwan’s capabilities to the world and extending a warm welcome to nurses based around the globe to participate in the upcoming event. (POC-E)
