MOEA hosts symposium to boost green transition

The Ministry of Economic Affairs staged a symposium on enhancing green competitiveness under the auspices of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation June 17 in the southern city of Kaohsiung to deepen cooperation in the region and reinforce links to overseas markets.

The MOEA said that the event, focused on micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), drew corporate leaders from APEC member economies including Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the U.S. The ministry added that discussions covered applications of artificial intelligence in carbon reduction, the development of a circular economy and green policy trends.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, MOEA Deputy Minister Ho Chin-tsang noted that MSMEs promoting energy transition are commonly challeneged by insufficient resources; as such, the government offers assistance in the form of energy audits, technical training and subsidies for low-carbon transition.

In response, Samuel Goffman, deputy branch chief of the American Institute in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Branch Office, and Masafumi Oku, director general of Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association’s Kaohsiung Office, said that Taiwan’s expertise in digital innovation, energy solutions and smart manufacturing could facilitate MSMEs’ entry into sustainable supply chains and drive transformation in the region, the MOEA added.

The ministry said that Charles Huang, chair of the Taipei City-based Circular Taiwan Network, a nonprofit organization promoting a circular economy, proposed a roadmap through which enterprises are encouraged to redefine demands and redesign corporate models to boost economic growth without increasing consumption of resources. Chen Tsung-jung, an assistant vice general manager from Kaohsiung City-headquartered China Steel Corp., pointed out that to reach carbon neutrality, CSC has introduced a smart system to reduce emissions during the production process and has enhanced energy efficiency by using AI to predict power demand, the MOEA added.

The ministry pledged to continue exchange and cooperation with fellow APEC members to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic MSMEs. (POC-E)
