Taiwan expands partnership with Czechia on Ukraine reconstruction

Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding with Czechia on upgrading key infrastructure and energy facilities in Ukraine June 27, underscoring the two sides’ dedication to helping the war-ravaged country achieve power system resilience and a stable drinking water supply.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the pact was inked via videoconference by Ke Liang-ruey, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague, and David Steinke, head of the Czech Economic and Cultural Office Taipei. The event was witnessed by MOFA Deputy Minister François Chih-chung Wu and Tomáš Kopečný, Czech special envoy for rebuilding in Ukraine.

In his remarks, Wu noted that the collaboration will construct a mobile water treatment facility that is expected to benefit 380,000 people in the Dnipropetrovsk region, as well as a combined heat-and-power system projected to improve the living conditions of 60,000 residents of Kharkiv.

In response, Kopečný lauded the trilateral cooperative model and said the signing marked a new milestone in Taiwan-Czechia partnership. He noted that both projects are a continuation of a bilateral initiative launched in 2023 and thanked the two governments for their ongoing efforts.

Taiwan continues to work closely with European nations to support Ukraine, underscoring the shared values of freedom, peace and respect for human rights between the country and its like-minded partners in the region, the ministry said. (POC-E)
