French film festival pays tribute to late Taiwan director Edward Yang

Filmmaker Edward Yang is the center of attention at the 53rd Festival La Rochelle Cinéma, which kicked off June 27 in the western coastal city of France.

The Ministry of Culture said that the festival is staging a retrospective of the late director’s work, including screenings of “A Confucian Confusion,” “A Brighter Summer Day,” “Taipei Story,” “In Our Time,” “Mahjong,” “Yi Yi,” and “Terrorizers,” as well as Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “A Summer at Grandpa’s,” in which Yang played a role.

Other highlights include a roundtable held June 29 to discuss Yang’s films and their contribution to the development of cinema in Taiwan, in addition to an event promoting the reprint of French film critic Jean-Michel Frodon’s in-depth overview of Yang’s career.

During the roundtable, Sylvie Pras, co-director of art for the festival, applauded Taiwan’s unwavering support for cultural activities like cinema. She thanked the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris for helping organize the retrospective.

Frodon said Yang’s cinematic work captures Taiwan’s development from the 1990s to 2000s, adding that his films provided a window for the world onto the many facets of Taipei City, a culturally diverse metropolis with an engaging mix of the traditional and modern.

Other speakers shared their experiences with Yang or thoughts on his work, including actor Virginie Ledoyen, who played a role in “Mahjong;” film critic Nicolas Thévenin; and Alain Jalladeau, who founded the 3 Continents Festival and first introduced Yang’s works to France.

The MOC has arranged for the retrospective to be moved to Cinémathéque Francaise in Paris following the film festival, with nine screenings of Yang’s films scheduled July 9-17. (SFC-E)
