Foreign Minister Lin calls for global unity against authoritarianism

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung said July 7 that Taiwan will continue to stand on the front line against expanding authoritarianism and work with like-minded partners to safeguard freedom and democracy.

The minister made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Research Forum in Taipei City that was attended by more than 50 academics from over 20 countries.

The two-day event was organized by the Research Center for International Legal Studies of Taipei-based National Chengchi University and the Chinese (Taiwan) Society of International Law, and sponsored by the London-based International Law Association and the American Society of International Law.

According to the minister, the government’s integrated diplomacy approach is based on the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and aims to deepen ties with other members of the free world.

Lin said daunting geopolitical challenges, especially the constant attempts by China to disrupt free trade and the rules-based international order, have put members of the democratic world on alert, prompting concerned nations to send military vessels through the Taiwan Strait to demonstrate that it is international waters and to highlight the importance they attach to regional security.

Citing historical documents, Lin said that the People’s Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan and that only the democratically elected government can represent the country’s 23 million people. He also thanked the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China and the parliaments of Australia, the Czech Republic, the EU, the Netherlands and the U.K. for passing resolutions opposing China’s distortion of U.N. Resolution 2758.

The minister said cross-strait developments are not just a regional issue but a global concern, adding that the more secure and resilient Taiwan is, the stronger the global democratic defense will be. As a force for good, Taiwan will continue to work with the world to safeguard peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, he added. (SFC-E)
