Three national parks overseen by agencies under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications’ Tourism Administration recently won Green Destinations Awards, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable development.
Among the recognized parks, the Nantou County-based Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area garnered a silver certification again this year after first receiving one in 2022, the TA said.
Penghu National Scenic Area took a QualityCoast Award, becoming Taiwan’s first outlying national park to receive the honor, the TA said, noting that the facility’s focus is maintaining marine culture heritage and ecology while creating a robust and safe environment.
North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area was awarded a bronze certificate this year, the TA said, adding that the location previously garnered a spot on the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list for two consecutive years, enhancing the scenic spot’s global visibility and drawing more international visitors.
The TA pledged to continue advancing sustainable travel by integrating ecological conservation, local culture and social participation in order to strike a balance between the economy, environment and society.
The Green Destinations Awards program follows the 84 global sustainable travel indexes formulated by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Certification requires two to three years of planning and implementation, as well as on-site evaluations by professional auditors, with the platinum, gold, silver and bronze rankings dependent on the degree of compliance.
