End to 50 year border conflict between Assam and Meghalaya, great feat under Modi Rule

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma resulted a significant move over 50 year old border conflict in the presence of HM Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday.

He had earlier said there had been “many push-ups” from PM Modi and HM Shah to resolve tensions between the two provinces.

“If India and Bangladesh can resolve border issues then why can’t these two provinces – that’s what the Center has taken,” he said.

The long-running conflict erupted in 1972 when Meghalaya was separated from Assam as a new state. Boundary problems arose as a result of various studies of boundary design in the original agreement for the establishment of a new state.

Prior to the signing of the agreement, the two CMs reportedly had a final conversation with the MHA.

The draft resolution was submitted by the CMs of Assam and Meghalaya to Shah on January 31 for review and consideration by the MHA. The governments of Assam and Meghalaya have come up with a pending resolution to resolve their border disputes in six of the 12 “areas of difference” near the 884-kilometer border.
