Israeli strike on Syria’s Damascus airport put it out of service, killed 2 soldiers

The Israeli Air Force carried out a strike on Damascus International Airport on Sunday evening, knocking it out of service, killing two soldiers and wounding two others, the Syrian army and state news agency SANA said.

A military source said that around 2:00 a.m. (23:00 GMT) Israel carried out an airstrike “with incendiary missiles targeting the international airport in and around Damascus”.

The attack “killed two soldiers and disabled Damascus International Airport.”

The Israel Defense Forces have not provided any comments, which generally do not confirm such airstrikes on an individual basis.

Last June, airstrikes attributed to Israel hit Damascus International Airport, causing significant damage and disabling the main runway. The airport reopened two weeks later after repairs.

Strikes at the airport have also been reported in previous years.

The weapons are believed to be smuggled to Iran-allied groups via Syria on Iranian cargo airlines that frequently land at Damascus International Air Base and Tiyas, or T-4, air base outside the central Syrian city of Palmyra.

Hebrew media reports characterized the alleged Israeli strikes as intended to prevent such arms trafficking.

The reported attacks come about two weeks after the last reported fighting. Israel’s military typically does not comment on specific strikes in Syria, but has admitted to conducting hundreds of combat operations against Iran-backed groups trying to gain a foothold in the country.
