Britain needs immediate gun law reforms, coroner warns

After Plymouth shootings major reform of gun laws needed, coroner warns he has said “radical reform” of firearms laws is needed after the mass shooting in Plymouth.

In a report into preventing future deaths, coroner Ian Arrow said current gun laws were “contrary to public safety”.

The inquiry, which ended in February, found a “catastrophic failure” by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Jake Davison, 22, used a legally held shotgun to kill his mother and four others before killing himself.

Maxine Davison, Sophie and Lee Martyn, Kate Shepherd and Stephen Washington were killed in the shooting in August 2021.

Mr Arrow, chief coroner for Plymouth, Torbay and South Devon, said there had been a “serious failure nationally” to implement the recommendations after the Dunblane massacre in 1996.

He said he was concerned “in other areas of the police force, guns may remain in the hands of individuals who pose a risk to the public”.

He asked all chief constables in England and Wales to consider a further review of all gun licenses approved in the last five years.
