5 things we’ve learned from Netflix’s Glow Up

Glow Up: The Next Makeup Star has taken Netflix by storm, slowly but surely rising to become one of the streaming platform’s favourite competition shows! With this fiery new makeup competition comes a whole whirlwind of new makeup tips from the comfort of our own homes – or vanity tables! – can take advantage of.

Are you ready to learn exactly how to transform your look? Read on for 5 things we’ve learned from Netflix’s Glow Up.

How to master makeup symmetry

The human eye positively adores symmetry, which is why your makeup looks so much better when it’s even on both sides! Glow Up has taught us that – to make your makeup perfectly symmetrical – start by applying a product on the side of your face that you’re not so confident about.

For example, if you’re right-handed, get working on the left side of your face first! You’ll find it easy to match the symmetry on the other side of your face.

How to cut your crease with ease

The competitors on Glow Up all love a cut crease, and so do we. Unfortunately, our eyelids don’t always co-operate with our makeup aspirations, and it can be harder to cut a sharp crease than you might think.

But, not to worry, the talented Glow Up contestants suggest doing this: outline where you’d like your crease to be with a dark powder – this can be as messy as you’d like! – then use a lighter powder to colour in the eyelid beneath your desired crease. Take an eyeshadow between these two contrasting shades, and use it to blend the top of the crease out.

Before you know it, you’ve achieved the perfect cut crease.

How to lift your lashes with falsies

There’s one thing that all Netflix Glow Up contestants agree on: false lashes should lift and enhance the eye, not make it droopy or drab.

Something we’ve learned that we makeup lovers should do is measure the length of our false lashes before we put them on! And, we should always remember to wait till our eyelash glue is tacky before applying falsies – after we cut them to size, of course.

This technique guarantees that your falsies will lift your eye, and stay in place for a long time.

Mind the size and shape of your brushes

We’ve all heard the saying that bigger doesn’t always mean better, and this holds true when it comes to your makeup brushes. Glow Up teaches us to mind the size and shape of our brushes, particularly when it comes to the more delicate parts of our makeup – like our contour or highlight.

Precision isn’t always what you need when it comes to painting a face, and larger brushes make for more natural strokes, which leads to less cakey makeup overall.

The next time you apply your foundation, concealer, blush or highlighter, look towards a bigger, fluffier brush. The difference to your makeup will be immediate.

Don’t forget the importance of a solid skincare regime

Glow Up constantly reminds us that a makeup look is nothing without a solid base beneath. This means that you must take care of your skin! Skincare regimes don’t have to be long and complicated to have a beneficial effect on your makeup base, either.

Many Glow Up contestants stay true to the basics: cleanser, moisturiser and toner. Their makeup looks are always fabulous as a result – clean, glowy and beautiful all round.
