PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu today

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open virtually 11 medical schools in Tamil Nadu today, January 12th. In addition to the medical faculties, a new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil opens in Chennai.

The new medical colleges were built at an estimated cost of around 4 billion rupees, of which around 2.145 million rupees were provided by the center and the remainder by the Tamil Nadu government, according to an official.

The districts in which the new medical faculties will be established include Virudhunagar, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram, and Krishnagiri.

New medical universities with a cumulative capacity of 1,450 places are being built as part of the centrally funded program “Establishment of new medical universities with connection to existing allocation districts/hospitals”.

According to the Prime Minister (PMO), MBBS seats increased by 79.60% (from 51,348 seats to 92,222 seats) and the number of PG seats increased by 80.70% (from 31,185 to 56,374) over the past seven years Seats).

The total number of medical seats prior to 2014 was around 82,500 and over the past seven years there has been an increase of about 80 percent or 66,000 seats, the PMO said.

The total number of medical schools (both government and private) increased from 387 to 596, an increase of about 54 percent, he said.
