Amsterdam Apple store hostage ends, Dutch police arrests gunman

Dutch police have put an end to the abduction after a man with a shotgun arrested several people at an Apple store in Amsterdam on Tuesday (February 22).

Police said the kidnapper was violently defeated after a siege that lasted several hours and all the hostages were released.

At about 10:30 pm local time (2130 GMT), the gunman was arrested after fleeing a building in central Leidseplein square, downtown Dutch.

Earlier, police had dispatched several special centers after reports of an armed robbery at 5:40 pm local time (1640 GMT). It seems that the robbery quickly changed to a state of abduction.

According to police, the gunman was “lying on the road and a traffic light was testing him to see if there were any explosives” in front of the Apple store.

Horror photos and videos have been circulated on social media when two people appeared to leave the Apple store.

One of them was hit by an unmarked car, flying over panic as a result. However, there is no official confirmation of the photos.

Tim Wagemakers, a freelance journalist, said he was in a nearby building.

He wrote on Twitter that there were armed police in the area, adding that people in the area had been asked not to enter the windows.
