India Expresses Grave Concern Over Islamist Attacks on Hindus and Temples in Bangladesh During Durga Puja

In a stern statement, India’s External Affairs Ministry expressed “serious concerns” over the recent attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh, specifically highlighting the vandalism of a Puja mandap in Tantibazar, Dhaka, and the theft of a crown gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the revered Jeshoreshwari Kali temple in Satkhira .

The ministry described these events as “deplorable” and part of a “systematic pattern of desecration and damage to temples and deities” witnessed over several days.

This attack on religious minorities, by the radical Islamic groups has been on a rise in countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan.

A Troubling Pattern of Violence Against Hindus

The recent attacks have raised significant alarm among the Hindu community and observers, intensifying during the Durga Puja festival. The attack on the Puja mandap in Tantibazar is part of a broader trend of violence against Hindus, particularly during significant religious events. Reports indicate that this year alone, idols have been damaged in numerous districts across Bangladesh, with 19 incidents reported in just the last two weeks.

History of Violence Against Religious Minorities in Bangladesh

The violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh is a critical problem. Minorities, more specifically Hindus have been repeatedly assaulted and attacked by Radical Islamic followers.

Bangladesh has witnessed numerous attacks on Hindu temples, vandalism of Hindu idols, and threats against worshippers in recent years. In 2022 alone, there were 12 recorded attacks on religious minorities, leading to significant injuries and damage to property. The situation has worsened since the political upheaval following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government, with many Hindus feeling increasingly unsafe during their religious observances.

Calls for Enhanced Security

In response to these incidents, Bangladesh government officials have called for heightened security measures. The Bangladeshi army has announced plans to enhance security for Durga Puja celebrations, deploying police and other forces to protect worshippers.

India’s Response

The External Affairs Ministry urged the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, especially during the auspicious festival time. India’s concerns come amid a growing sense of unease among the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Key Developments:

  • Attack on Hindu Puja Mandap: Vandalism of a Puja mandap in Tantibazar, Dhaka
  • Theft at Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple: Crown gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi stolen
  • Systematic Pattern of Desecration: 19 incidents reported in the last two weeks
  • History of Violence: 12 recorded attacks on religious minorities in 2022

As tensions continue to rise, India’s condemnation of the attacks serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased protection and security for religious minorities in Bangladesh.
