Six killed in knife attack at Chinese kindergarten

A man armed with a knife stormed into a kindergarten in eastern China on Monday, killing six people and injuring 14 others, state media reported.

The attack took place at around 9:30 a.m. local time in the city of Beiliu in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

The suspect, identified by his surname Qiu, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody, Xinhua said.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear, but such incidents are not uncommon in China, where access to firearms is tightly restricted and disgruntled individuals often target schools and public places with knives or homemade explosives.

In June last year, a man stabbed 39 students and staff at a primary school in southern China, leaving two dead and several injured.

In October 2018, a woman slashed 14 children with a kitchen knife at a kindergarten in Chongqing, southwest China.

The Chinese government has stepped up security measures and mental health services in recent years to prevent such attacks, but experts say they are difficult to prevent entirely due to social grievances and personal vendettas.
