Two alleged terrorists in possession of 1,000 detonators were arrested from Karachi’s North Nazimabad on Wednesday in a joint operation by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA), a press release said.
According to a statement by SIU Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Junaid Ahmed Sheikh, the two terrorists were “arrested using explosive materials” while a search was on for their third accomplice who managed to escape.
SSP Sheikh said 1,000 detonators were recovered from the arrested suspects and two coil detonators were also seized.
He said in a statement that the two terrorists were arrested while they were transporting explosives from one place to another in the city.
During preliminary investigation, the suspects confessed to transporting explosives from Peshawar to Karachi for use in “terrorist activities”, the press release said. It added that the person who brought them in was a suspect on the run.
The statement also revealed that the suspects’ partner was earlier arrested from Charsadda town in Punjab also with explosives and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
A case under the Explosives Act, 1908 has been registered at the SIU police station against the suspects while further investigation is underway, the report added.
