Nature’s Palette: Celebrating Simplicity in the Midst of Technological Wonders

In the unforgiving arena of existence, it is inevitable that there will be those who seek to wound you, diminish your accomplishments, or subject you to unnecessary scrutiny. It is a harsh reality that we all must confront. Encompassing the possible stories of what I see through the lens of my camera, I have always believed myself to have acquired a perspective  that renders such tribulations trivial, when I began my academics in media studies; fueled by a passionate pursuit dating back to 2018. As I learnt to toggle between the depth of field and aligned interest to create a story, though at the pace of an unfurling spring after a long winter. This hobby of camaraderie is my bulwark, imbues me with a resilience that fear cannot penetrate, a sense of worth that is immune to belittlement. With every shot, comes the chance to keep developing the inner calling to deliver a voice even louder.

It offers a comforting reminder that solitude is not synonymous with isolation. And it is through this art of storytelling I encase this epiphany: the companionship that fortifies me against adversity, reaffirming my inherent dignity, and illuminates my most profound solitude – moments I keep safe that talks for itself, which goes by wildfower_hermosa on Instagram. As the author, Vishu R Krocha writes ‘written with much hope in my heart that one of these poems will resonate with you, may you, the one holding this book on your hands, find the light you are searching for’, I dedicate this work on the auspicious occasion that celebrates photographers and the dabbler artists that provokes viewers and heals the rages.

Nagaland too is no stranger to photography, there’s grown a hub of bubbly enthusiasts but the mundane scene of repetitive theme and the fact, in its 60 years as a state has no identified  photojournalist who is attributed to the wholesome reasons, although we can’t unsee the established presence of print media and the gradual digital newsroom. The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic inadvertently accelerated the adoption of digital journalism highlighting both its potential and areas for improvement.

The core of photography as an art as my readers are aware of, is the transcendence of mere visual depiction. And with due sensible awareness I quote, “In the heart of every Naga photographer lies the innate ability to celebrate life’s moments, to immortalize the joyous, the candid, and the intimate. While the world’s turmoil may go undocumented, the essence of community and celebration remains eternally captured.”. While that very instant is not wrong and the contributions acknowledged, should we not be open to challenges and surf through for a historic o’clock.

Clearly, thank God we have fared better, made efforts to not ignite the ‘violence culture’, but then let us not be content with the reflection of what we know, the mirroring of our festivities. Let’s recognize that within the folds of everyday life lies a spectrum of stories waiting to be woven into the fabric of our narrative. Naga photographers have the power to rewrite history, to capture moments that resonate beyond the joyous celebrations. As we mark this sensible World Photography Day, which first gained much spotlight dating to 2010, I invite readers to delve deeper into this realm through a special spotlight on an artist who I feel embodies the spirit and challenges of this art form. Choosing to let his art take center stage, this discreet talent captures the essence of nature with a passion deeply rooted in literature. I can only say he hails from the place which inspired Nagaland’s most accomplished musician to compose ‘PfÜtsero’. He likens his greetings to William Wordsworth’s eloquent words which echoes through the stillness: “This calm and quiet scene; The memory of what has been, And never more will be.”

Whispers of the Earth: Through the Literary Lens as titled by him drawn from multiple suggested lists we made before settling the bill, we dive into the captivating world of a photographer who views nature through a literary lens.

“Nature and literature,” he begins, “intertwine seamlessly. This passionate artist’s journey began with literature, which ignited his affection for nature. The tranquility of the environment became a reflection of the calm verses he read.

Voice of the Artist

When asked about the symbolism in nature, he remarks, “Nature’s relationship with humans knows no boundaries. It represents a mental and spiritual healer to me, a testament to God’s creation.” He envisions nature as a silent protagonist, one that exudes calmness, sacrifice, and benevolence.

The metaphorical framing of his shots, he says, is an attempt to mirror human emotions. The sight of a sunrise, with its vibrant hues, instills a positive mindset and an energy to embrace the day’s challenges. As for the visual dialogue in his images, he believes that just as literature communicates emotions through words, photographs convey feelings through visuals. “A panoramic view of Mt.Kapamodzu, taken during the post-COVID season, is not just a picture for me. It’s a testament to nature’s healing power,” he shares.

If his photographs were to be translated into a literary genre, he firmly believes poetry would be the best fit. The fluidity and depth of poetry match the essence of his shots.

Fun Facts

He shares that the nostalgic scent of cosmos flowers transports him back to his hometown, Pfutsero. The melody of Prateek Kuhad’s “Kasoor” would be his choice as a soundtrack for his nature shots. And when presented with the classic photographer’s dilemma of choosing between the morning dew and the golden hour, he can’t pick a favorite. Both hold a special allure for him. One of his most heartwarming moments while photographing nature was stumbling upon a garden of daisies blooming amidst old government quarters.

In terms of equipment, he adopts a minimalist approach, relying on his phone and a tripod. He also recalls moments where he chose to savor nature’s beauty with his eyes rather than through the lens, such as his visit to Dzukuo.

Personal Goals and Vision

While he doesn’t see photography as his primary profession, he’s incredibly passionate about the craft. Instagram friends have been influential in shaping his vision, and he draws inspiration from their stories. His photographs, he believes, provide insights into his personality and his life as a literature student.

Over time, he’s surmounted challenges, the most profound being the realization that breathtaking photos aren’t contingent on professional equipment. This epiphany has propelled him further in his passion, continually fueled by the unwavering support of his followers. His mantra? “God has never failed me. My past challenges strengthened me, and today, I bask in His blessings.”

Arists’s Closing Remark

Our environment has bestowed us with its incredible beauty. As guardians of this gift, it’s our duty to cherish and protect it. Let’s strive each day to make a positive change, ensuring a brighter tomorrow. Our artist’s parting words resonate deeply, “Today, let’s try to strive, to seek, and not to yield, ensuring our accomplishments through challenges bring joy and no regret.” Deep affection for nature has its roots in literature. And as we circle between his voice, I can ascertain that it has demanded of him to have a vivid imagination of nature, and this imagination eventually transformed into an ardent love for capturing it. Each snapshot embodies a fragment of his soul, encapsulating his emotions and memories.

Reflecting On Simplicity In A Complex Age

The digital age, marked by the rise of the internet, smart gadgets, fast foods, and the intriguing blockchain technology, has undeniably brought convenience and progress to our fingertips. Yet, ironically, amidst this bustling cacophony of advancements, a deep-seated yearning has emerged. Many of us, ensnared in the webs of urban frenzy, feel an insatiable hunger for something more straightforward—a return to the serenity of rural life, a hunger for the soil beneath our feet, and the vast expanse of the sky above.

This very juxtaposition of our high-tech life with an innate desire to return to our roots is fascinating. Is it not intriguing that despite being equipped with tools designed to bring the world closer, we often feel more distant and lost than ever? And as blockchain promises an unalterable digital future, there’s an increasing allure in the idea of ‘drooling for a simple life.’ A life where the sky is not just another wallpaper on our devices but a canvas we gaze upon, pondering life’s mysteries. Where life isn’t dictated by algorithms, but by the rhythm of the seasons.

To understand this magnetic pull towards nature, one needs to recognize that humanity, for the most part of its existence, was deeply connected to the land. Farming, sky-gazing, and living in harmony with nature was not just a way of life but an intrinsic part of our identity. The truth is, technology can provide a multitude of experiences, but the raw, unfiltered beauty of life is often found in its simplest forms.

Author’s message

The featured artist’s journey unveils the tug-of-war between a world that is advancing at lightning speed and the inherent human yearning to stay connected with nature, literature, and our roots. In the backdrop of Nagaland’s photographic sphere, which seems to be steeped in a repetitive narrative, this artist’s perspective is a fresh breath. The artist, with his profound passion and literary flair, subtly challenges this status quo, urging the community to delve deeper and explore the myriad stories Nagaland has to offer.

While celebrating photography, the artist echoes the broader sentiment of redefining the purpose and essence of this medium. Instead of just capturing joyous celebrations, there’s an underlying message to document the myriad of stories lying unnoticed in the everyday life of the Nagas.
