New Delhi: The Delhi government will give a grant of £5,500 each to the first 10,000 e-bike buyers in the city, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said on Thursday.

The first 1,000 electric passenger bike buyers will also receive an additional subsidy of £2,000, he added. The government will also provide subsidies for the purchase of high-performance electric bicycles and electric cars for commercial use, he said.

Previously the subsidy was given to individual buyers of e-carts, but now a company or entity buying these vehicles also receives a £30,000 subsidy, he said.

Only residents of Delhi are eligible for the subsidy scheme, Mr. Gahlot said. The minister said there are currently 45,900 vehicles on the city’s roads, of which 36 percent are two-wheelers.

The share of vehicles in the total number of vehicles registered in Delhi has surpassed 12 percent, he added.
