Department of Posts unveils commemorative postage stamp on Mata Karma’s 1009th birth anniversary

In a significant tribute to Mata Karma, a revered saint and social reformer, the Department of Posts, Government of India, has unveiled a commemorative postage stamp to mark her 1009th birth anniversary. The release event, held in Raipur on Tuesday, was graced by the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Vishnu Deo Sai, Union Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, and several Members of the Legislative Assembly, along with key representatives from the Chhattisgarh Government and the Akhil Bhartiya Tailik Mahasabha, as stated by the Ministry of Communications.

Mata Karma is celebrated for her unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna and her lifelong commitment to social reform. Known for her courage and selfless service, Mata Karma traveled to the holy city of Puri to seek Lord Krishna’s blessings, where she humbly prepared khichdi, a traditional dish, at the request of the temple servants. Legend has it that Lord Krishna accepted her offering, and this sacred tradition has since become a lasting part of the rituals at the Jagannath Temple. The commemorative stamp, which vividly depicts Mata Karma offering khichdi to Lord Krishna with the iconic Jagannath Temple in the background, honors this significant historical moment.

Beyond her religious devotion, Mata Karma’s contributions to social harmony and women’s empowerment continue to resonate today. She championed the fight against social evils such as untouchability and conservatism, advocating for unity and inclusivity in society. The release of this commemorative stamp by India Post serves as a fitting recognition of her enduring legacy.

The stamp, along with associated philatelic items such as the First Day Cover (FDC) and Information Brochure, is now available at Philately Bureaus across the country and can also be purchased online at www.epostoffice.gov.in.
