External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg on Thursday, congratulating him on his appointment and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
“Good to meet Ethiopian FM Gedion Timotheos of Ethiopia. Congratulated him on his appointment and agreed to work together to strengthen our longstanding partnership,” Jaishankar said.
The External Affairs Minister also engaged with foreign ministers from various nations at the G20 meeting, remarking that it was “good to see colleagues from across the world.”
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar held discussions with his Singaporean and Brazilian counterparts on the sidelines of the summit.
During his meeting with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, the two leaders deliberated on bilateral relations and global affairs. “Always a good conversation with FM @VivianBala of Singapore, this time in Johannesburg on the sidelines of G20 FMM. Discussed the state of the world and our work in furthering bilateral ties,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Jaishankar also met Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, where they discussed bilateral relations, global developments, and cooperation within the G20 and Brazil’s BRICS Presidency. “Delighted to meet FM Mauro Vieira of Brazil today in Johannesburg. Discussed bilateral ties, global developments, our work in the G20 and Brazil’s BRICS Presidency,” he said.
Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to South Africa to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) at the invitation of South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola.
According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) press release, Jaishankar’s participation in the G20 FMM will strengthen India’s engagement with G20 countries and bolster the voice of the Global South in this key forum. He is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit.
South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency from December 1, 2024, to November 2025 under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” which will guide the priorities of Working Groups in both Sherpa and Finance Tracks and shape High-Level Deliverables of South Africa’s presidency, according to the official statement.
