New Delhi: The coronavirus vaccines came at a time when the whole world was battling the effects of the SARs-COV-2 virus.
She proved to be a boon during uncertain times and everyone kept their trust in her. However, experts are a little uncertain about the effectiveness of the vaccine with the advent of the newer covid variant Omicron.
This new and heavily mutated variant, although believed to be ‘mild’, is also known to evade the vaccine. Which is capable of infecting even fully vaccinated people. This is the reason why Omicron cases are increasing rapidly.
Are existing vaccines effective against COVID-19?
Preliminary research suggests that the COVID vaccines administered in most countries are not effective or provide any protection against the highly infectious Omicron variant. However, it has been found that existing vaccines do provide protection against serious omicron disease.
While the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were supported by a third booster shot, they appeared to be somewhat successful in preventing infection with Omicron. However, unfortunately, these two mRNA vaccines are not available in most countries.
Caution against variants
In view of the increasing outbreak of infection globally, experts have urged people to be alert and aware at all times. Given that the COVID-19 vaccines do not provide adequate protection against the Omicron variant, taking precautions is the only way to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
