IIM Bodh Gaya organised its flagship event Model United Nations (MUN)

The International Relations Committee (IRC) of IIM Bodh Gaya successfully completed its flagship event Model United Nations (MUN), from 4th-5th February 2023 in an online mode. MUN catalyzes students to think like diplomats and act as global citizens.

This year, the event had the honor of welcoming and bringing together participants from around the country and from the international partner institutes of the institute to engage in the most rigorous discussion and negotiation aimed at simulating and resolving the most pressing problems confronting our society today.

The two committees, the Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) and the Disarmament & International Security Committee (DISEC), discussed two critical issues: “Tackling the potential economic crisis in 2023” and “Resolving rising global tensions in the wake of the Ukraine-Russia war.”

DISEC was presided over by Mr. Shreyas Salve, an experienced member of MUN for the past ten years, and Mr. Akshat Tarush, who has been a part of the organizing committees of MUNs for the last three years.

For ECOFIN, Mr. Lakhan Saddi, a significant member of the MUN circuit, has chaired several conferences. His co-chair, Ms. Khushi Bhati, has served as the secretariat member at the office of the G20 Youth Ambassador.

The ECOFIN is one of the six important committees of the General Assembly. Economic and financial issues on a worldwide scale are covered in this committee. Every year, it convenes in early October to wrap up its work by the end of November.

Each of the 193 United Nations members who make up ECOFIN has an equal number of votes. The body develops policies for finance, economy, and growth. Like other UN organizations, ECOFIN can create policies and write regulations but needs help to carry them out. In this committee, cooperation and support are therefore crucial, as are carefully thought-out incentive schemes to persuade countries to agree to participate in the resolutions this organization produces voluntarily.

The DISEC deals with disarmament, global challenges, and threats to peace that affect the international community and seeks solutions to the difficulties in the international security regime. It considers all disarmament and international security matters within the scope of the charter or relating to the powers and functions of any other organ of the United Nations, the general principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armaments, promotion of cooperative arrangements and measures aimed at strengthening stability through lower levels of armaments.

The committee works closely with the United Nations Disarmament Commission and the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament. It is the only central committee of the General Assembly entitled to verbatim records coverage.

Delegates from reputed institutes across the country, like IIM Raipur, IIM Shillong, KIIT University, NMIMS, and Symbiosis, took an active part in all the debates and discussions. The winners were awarded, and the participants received certificates of participation.
