Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius witnessed the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing strategic cooperation and economic collaboration between the two nations.
These agreements covered areas such as currency settlement, water management, and shipping information sharing, further deepening bilateral ties.
Among the key agreements was an MoU between the Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India on a Local Currency Settlement System, facilitating smoother financial transactions. Additionally, a Credit Facility Agreement was signed between the Government of Mauritius and the State Bank of India to finance projects under the Central Water Authority’s Pipe Replacement Programme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently positioned India as a strong development partner, supporting infrastructure, healthcare, education, and connectivity projects worldwide. His visit to Mauritius marks another milestone with the inauguration of the Civil Service College and an Area Health Centre, both built with India’s grant assistance.
Beyond Mauritius, India has played a pivotal role in development projects across multiple nations under Modi’s leadership. Notable initiatives include the construction of the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital in Bhutan, completed in two phases in 2019 and 2024, providing specialized maternal and child healthcare services. In Bangladesh, PM Modi, along with the then Prime Minister, inaugurated key projects in 2023, including the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
Strengthening regional connectivity, India also played a crucial role in launching Nepal’s first broad-gauge passenger railway link, the Jayanagar-Kurtha railway, in 2022. In Seychelles, PM Modi and President Ramkalawan jointly inaugurated the Magistrates’ Court building in Victoria in 2021, marking the first Indian-assisted infrastructure project in the country. Similarly, in 2020, India supported the construction of the new Supreme Court building in Mauritius, inaugurated via video conference.
In previous years, India has undertaken several high-impact infrastructure projects, including the Metro Express project and New ENT Hospital in Mauritius in 2019, the Afghan-India Friendship Dam in 2016, the Jaffna Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka in 2015, and the Afghan Parliament Building the same year. These projects have reinforced India’s role as a dependable development partner focused on mutual growth and cooperation.
