The Indian Navy has approached the government with a proposal to acquire two nuclear attack submarines, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s naval capabilities. The proposal, which is currently under consideration, is part of the Navy’s efforts to enhance its underwater warfare capabilities.
The nuclear attack submarines, also known as SSNs, are designed to operate in the depths of the ocean and can stay submerged for extended periods. They are equipped with advanced sensors, torpedoes, and missiles, making them a formidable force in naval warfare.
The acquisition of SSNs is seen as a strategic move by the Indian Navy to counter the growing presence of Chinese submarines in the Indian Ocean. The Navy has been seeking to bolster its submarine fleet, which currently consists of conventional and nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.
The proposal for the two SSNs is expected to be discussed by the Defence Ministry and other government agencies. If approved, the submarines will be built in India with foreign collaboration, with Russia and France being potential partners.
