The Donald Trump administration has welcomed India’s “early body signals” on trade, with a senior White House official expressing optimism for a “fair” bilateral trade deal between the two countries by the end of 2025.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump, the official said that while substantial work remains, the initial approach from the Indian government has been well received in Washington. The official anticipated that the discussions between the two leaders would further propel efforts towards solidifying a balanced trade agreement, emphasizing the importance of this collaboration between two dynamic and growing economies.
Highlighting the significance of the US-India partnership, the official described it as potentially the “most critical partnership of the 21st century.” Addressing India’s diplomatic role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the official stated that the US would welcome India’s involvement in fostering peace in Europe, acknowledging India’s extensive diplomatic relationships.
The White House official also underscored the strong personal rapport between PM Modi and President Trump, noting their history of joint public engagements and the natural warmth that has defined their interactions since Trump’s first term. This camaraderie, the official said, plays a vital role in diplomatic relations.
India’s hosting of the Quad leaders’ summit later this year was also highlighted, with the official emphasizing the strength of the bilateral connection between India and the US within the quadrilateral grouping that also includes Japan and Australia.
On regional cooperation, the official outlined the Trump administration’s vision for a stronger defense partnership with India, increased defense exercises, and strategic technological collaboration. Referring to key regional initiatives like the Quad, I2U2 (extending the Abraham Accords), and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the official highlighted their potential to foster infrastructure development and regional stability.
When questioned about India’s role in the US strategy towards China, the official affirmed India’s critical position in the Indo-Pacific framework, particularly in light of the border tensions with China. The US-India partnership, the official noted, remains a cornerstone of America’s national security and economic strategies in the region.
PM Modi arrived in Washington DC for a two-day visit at the invitation of President Trump, marking his first visit to the US since Trump’s re-election. Welcomed at the airport by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and other officials, PM Modi expressed his eagerness to strengthen the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the US.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet.”
Before departing for the US, PM Modi emphasized that this visit aims to build upon the successes of his previous term’s collaboration with President Trump, with a focus on advancing cooperation in technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience for mutual benefit and global betterment.
