The Jammu and Kashmir government announced on Tuesday that 48 tourist destinations across the Valley have been closed to visitors in an effort to tighten security after last week’s attack on tourists.

In the April 22 attack, terrorists opened fire on tourists in Baisaran near Pahalgam, killing 26 people, including a local resident and a Nepali national, in what reports indicate was a targeted assault on Hindu men.

Kashmir has a total of 87 tourist destinations, of which 48 have now been closed. According to an official, the remaining 39 destinations have been provided with enhanced security.

Following the attack, there has been a significant drop in tourist arrivals. The number of passengers arriving at Srinagar airport has notably declined.

The killing of tourists in Pahalgam has triggered nationwide outrage, with people across the country strongly condemning the barbaric attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed that the terrorists, their backers, and handlers will be hunted down and face punishment “beyond their imagination.”

In response to the attack, security forces have demolished 10 houses belonging to active terrorists, including those of Adil Hussain Thoker and Asif Sheikh — both believed to be responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack.

On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a unanimous resolution condemning the attack. The resolution described it as heinous, barbaric, inhumane, and cowardly, highlighting that such acts of terror directly undermine the ethos of Kashmiriyat, the values of the Constitution, and the spirit of unity, peace, and harmony. The Assembly expressed solidarity with the victims and extended condolences to their families.
