Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Mark Carney on his election as the Prime Minister of Canada and extended his best wishes to the Liberal Party on their electoral victory.
“India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Carney, a renowned economist and former Governor of the Bank of Canada, was chosen by the Liberal Party as Trudeau’s successor. Throughout his campaign, he pledged to “rebuild” the strained relationship with India and emphasized the need for closer cooperation with like-minded democracies.
“What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India,” Carney said during an interaction in Calgary, signaling a shift in Ottawa’s approach toward New Delhi.
Just last week, Carney reiterated the importance of ties with India, saying, “It’s an incredibly important relationship, the Canada-India relationship, on many levels. At this point, where the world economy and the global system are being reshaped, countries like Canada and India can play an outsized role in building an open, shared economy and shared ideas.”
During his tenure as Governor of the Bank of Canada, he helped the country navigate the 2008 global financial crisis. Later, as the head of the Bank of England, he oversaw the UK economy through the turbulence of Brexit. In 2020, he was appointed the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, further broadening his global credentials.
According to his official profile, Carney is now committed to rebuilding the Canadian economy and restoring the country’s standing on the global stage. “Mark offers the proven leadership and real plan we need to deliver change for our party and our country, and to build the strongest economy in the G7,” the profile reads.
