Children’s Day is celebrated on November 14 every year as a mark of respect to the first Prime Minister of independent India.
Nehru was fondly called ‘Chacha Nehru’ and was known for emphasising the importance of giving love and affection to children.
Nehru, born on November 14, 1889, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, served as India’s first Prime Minister from August 15, 1947, until his passing on May 27, 1964. His role in India’s freedom struggle and his leadership in shaping the newly independent nation left a lasting legacy.
On this day, schools across the country organize various activities for students, such as games and competitions, while government institutions conduct memorial events to honor Nehru’s contributions.
Before 1956, India celebrated Children’s Day on November 20, in line with the United Nations’ declaration of Universal Children’s Day. However, after Nehru’s death, Parliament passed a resolution making November 14 the official National Children’s Day in his memory.
