Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver a Special Session of the Guyanese Parliament today, marking a significant moment in his ongoing diplomatic outreach. As part of his three-nation tour, which included stops in Nigeria and Brazil, this visit to Guyana is particularly notable as PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in over 50 years.
PM Modi is in Guyana as a part of his three-nation tour wherein he previously was in Nigeria and then Brazil. His visit to Guyana becomes significant as he is the first Indian PM to visit the country in over 50 years.
During his visit, PM Modi will address the Guyanese Parliament, making this the 14th time he will speak before a foreign legislature. This achievement has earned him the distinction of being the Indian Prime Minister with the highest number of addresses to foreign parliaments. By comparison, his predecessors, including former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh (7 addresses), Indira Gandhi (4), and Jawaharlal Nehru (3), delivered fewer such speeches.
PM has delivered speeches across continents, from the Americas to Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia. His addresses are seen as a testament to India’s expanding influence on the global stage. PM Modi has addressed the U.S. Congress twice—once in 2016 and again in 2023. He also spoke to the Parliaments of Australia, Fiji, and the UK in the past, along with legislative chambers in Mauritius, Uganda, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Afghanistan, and the Maldives.
PM Modi was awarded Guyana’s highest national honor, The Order of Excellence, by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. The award recognizes PM Modi’s exceptional leadership, statesmanship, and his efforts to strengthen India-Guyana relations.
Furthermore, the Commonwealth of Dominica honored PM Modi with the Dominica Award of Honour for his exemplary leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his unwavering commitment to enhancing India-Dominica ties.
