In a stern warning to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the growing concern of “digital arrest fraud” during his 115th ‘Mann Ki Baat’ episode on Sunday, October 27. He played an audio-video clip that exposed a man impersonating a police officer, asking the victim to share their Aadhar number to block a mobile number.
“This audio is not just for information, it’s a deep concern,” PM Modi emphasized, highlighting the fraudulent conversation between a victim and a scammer. These fraudsters, he explained, impersonate officials from the police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Narcotics, and Reserve Bank of India (RBI), using various labels to converse with confidence.
The scammers’ tactics involve gathering personal information, surprising victims with details like travel history and family information, to create an atmosphere of fear. They then pressure victims to make hasty decisions, threatening arrest if demands aren’t met immediately. PM Modi cautioned that people from every class and age group fall victim to this scam.
To combat this scam, PM Modi urged citizens to remain vigilant and outlined the importance of digital security. He emphasized the need to stop, think, and take action when receiving suspicious calls or messages. Citizens should remain calm, not panic, and avoid sharing personal information. They should also verify the authenticity of calls and messages and report incidents to the cybercrime helpline (1930) or website.
The Prime Minister stressed that no investigative agency conducts inquiries via phone or video calls. He labeled digital arrest scams as deceitful and illegal, emphasizing that those perpetrating these crimes are enemies of society. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also issued warnings against such scams, urging citizens to remain alert and report suspicious activities.
By spreading awareness and taking proactive measures, India can combat the rising threat of digital arrest fraud and ensure a safer digital landscape for all citizens. PM Modi’s warning serves as a timely reminder to stay vigilant and protect personal information in the digital age.
