The fourth day of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was suspended due to rain on Tuesday, with Team India at 252/9, trailing Australia by 193 runs.
The final wicket partnership between Jasprit Bumrah (10*) and Akash Deep (27*) held firm, adding 39 runs to prevent the follow-on. Both players hit a six each, keeping India’s hopes alive.
Australia, who started the day with India at 51/4, made significant breakthroughs early. Pat Cummins dismissed Rohit Sharma (10) and Ravindra Jadeja, who top-scored with 77 runs, before taking out India’s all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. Mohammed Siraj was also dismissed by Australia’s pace spearhead, Mitchell Starc.
With just one day remaining, the last two Indian batsmen must capitalize on the opportunity to attack the Australian bowlers and try to reduce the deficit. India will aim to avoid defeat, as a loss would severely impact their World Test Championship points, with India currently sitting in third place.
Given the persistent rain delays, the match is likely to end in a draw.
A major concern for India has been the poor form of key players, particularly Rohit Sharma, who has scored just 19 runs across three innings, and former captain Virat Kohli, whose contributions have also been underwhelming.
Both players will need to regain their form in the second innings to boost India’s chances in the upcoming fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The series is currently tied at 1-1, with both teams eyeing a crucial win to gain momentum.
