Rekha Gupta begins tenure as Delhi CM with Yamuna Aarti, Cabinet members join ceremony

On her first day as Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, along with her newly inducted cabinet members and Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, attended the evening aarti at Vasudev Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna.

Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, took oath as the ninth Chief Minister of Delhi earlier in the day at a grand swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Maidan. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, top BJP leaders, and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.

The 50-year-old leader was chosen as Delhi’s new Chief Minister during the BJP Legislature Party meeting at the party’s national headquarters on Wednesday. Alongside her, Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, Ravinder Indraj Singh, and Pankaj Singh were also sworn in as ministers by Lt. Governor VK Saxena.

Earlier in the day, visuals showed an ongoing cleaning process in the Yamuna River. The BJP, which secured a historic mandate by winning 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections, has prioritized the river’s cleanup. On February 16, trash skimmers, weed harvesters, and dredge utility vehicles were deployed as part of the initiative, while the evening aarti was also introduced at Vasudev Ghat.

Pollution in the Yamuna was a key electoral issue, with political parties blaming each other over encroachments, flood management, and the deteriorating water quality. The BJP has accused the AAP government of failing to fulfill its promises on cleaning the river and has pledged to make it a top priority.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal urged the newly elected Delhi government to table the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report and expedite the Yamuna cleanup. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured on February 8 that the report would be presented in the first session of the new assembly.
