US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, though he shared no details about the negotiations or the terms of the agreement.
The announcement was made via Truth Social, the social media platform owned by Trump.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” he wrote. “Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
In a separate statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he and Vice President J.D. Vance had conducted the negotiations leading to the ceasefire.
“Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik,” Rubio said in a statement issued by the State Department.
“I am pleased to announce that the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and will begin talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
According to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, during his call with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Rubio emphasized the need for both sides to identify ways to de-escalate and re-establish direct communication to prevent future miscalculations.
“He further proposed US support in facilitating productive discussions to avert future disputes,” Bruce added.
