New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India today gives its rationale for ruling on quotas for other backward classes (OBC) and economically vulnerable sections (EWS) in the PG All India Quota (AIQ) Seats (MBBS /BDS and MD/MS) case /MDS) announced January 20, according to Live Law.
The Special Tribunal of Justices DY Chandrachud and Justices AS Bopanna upheld the Center’s decision to institute a 27 percent OBC reserve for AIQ UG and PG medical seats.
The Supreme Court also allowed a 10 percent EWS, which has been set aside for this year and future years, the Supreme Court said, the criteria to be decided at a final hearing no later than the third week of March.
The court reached its ruling after hearing petitions challenging the Center’s July 29 notice to implement a 27 percent OBC and 10 percent reserve rate of NEET UG and NEET PG across India.
“We have confirmed the constitutional validity of the 27 percent reservation for OBC in NEET PG AND UG. For this year’s EWS, that year’s 10 percent applies and the prospective decision will be decided at a final EWS hearing to be held in the third week of March 2022,” Judge DY Chandrachud said, according to the Bar and Bench. NEET PG consultation for 50 percent of AIQ seats is underway.
While Round 1 registration and elections are complete, the outcome of the NEET PG Consultation Round 1 is yet to be announced and is scheduled to be announced on January 22nd. There will be three more rounds of NEET PG counseling.
Round 2 takes place from February 3rd to 19th, the catch-up round from February 24th to March 10th, and the missed place round from March 11th to 16th.
