Alfie has since been diagnosed with the disease, but hasn’t told his nearest and dearest on the Square.
But in upcoming scenes, his diagnosis is revealed during a confrontation with Phil Mitchell on his wedding day to Alfie’s ex, Kat Slater.
Alfie arrives at Peggy’s, and when alone he punches Phil after trying to get to the bottom of Phil’s recent behaviour behind Kat’s back.
But as the two men battle it out, its clear something else is bothering Alfie, and he emotionally reveals that he lied and he does in fact have prostate cancer.
Phil is left in disbelief when Alfie reveals he’s having a prostatectomy.
As Alfie heads off to the hospital, Phil arrives at the registry office late, and Kat panics when she realises her ex-husband isn’t with him.
Meanwhile, Linda learns about Alfie’s hospital visit from Mitch, and after putting two and two together arrives to support him with his prostatectomy.
The soap is working alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support, as well as experts in the field to ensure the storyline is portrayed as accurately and as sensitively as possible.
EastEnders‘ executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, teased a “tough road ahead” for Alfie.
He revealed: “When we first embarked on this storyline we knew it was imperative that we worked alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support to take on and accurately portray such an emotional and pivotal storyline for Alfie, and one that many viewers may relate to Shane has thoughtfully portrayed the realities of being diagnosed with prostate cancer with grace and understanding.
“We hope that this storyline resonates with the audience, and that we represent it as sensitively, and as accurately as possible.”
EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
