Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and former West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi died at the age of 88 at his home in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The three-time chairman of the UP Legislature has not been well for the past month.
On December 8, he broke his arm after falling in the washroom. He also had general weakness in addition to decreased oral intake and urine output and was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital on December 30. After a week of treatment at the hospital, Tripathi was brought home where he died around 5 am, family members said.
Tripathi had earlier contracted the Covid virus twice and recovered after long treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, they added.
Tripathi, a senior advocate of the Allahabad High Court, has served as a member of the UP Legislative Assembly for six terms. He represented Jhunsi seat from 1977-1980) and Allahabad South seat for five consecutive terms between 1989-2007). Between 1991 and 2004, he also served three times as chairman of the UP legislature.
On 14 July 2014, Tripathi was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. He had two additional charges of Bihar as Governor and also as Governor of Meghalaya and Mizoram.
