A 55-year-old man, suffering from severe constipation and abdominal pain, underwent surgery on Sunday by a team of doctors who removed a glass tube from his gut.
The hospital located in Madipur area of the city, understandably, aroused the curiosity of medical professionals and people alike, all of whom were left wondering how this thing got into the patient’s dining room.
According to Drs. Mahmudul Hasan, head of a team of surgeons, hails from Mahua in the nearby Vaishali region and his ultrasound and X-ray reports showed something wrong with his gut.
Sharing a surgical video and an X-ray taken before the surgery with the media, Hasan said “how the glass bowl ended up inside, is a mystery right now.
“We asked the patient if he had swallowed a cup of tea, but that was not a satisfactory explanation.
The doctor said that an initial attempt was made to remove the glass from the rectum with an endoscopic procedure.
“But that didn’t work. So we had to open his stomach and remove the tube after cutting him on the intestinal wall,” Hasan said.
The patient is stable, said the doctor, adding that recovery will likely be delayed as after surgery the small intestine has been removed and fistular openings have been created to pass the feces.
“It is expected that his intestines will cool down in a few months after which we will close the fistula and his intestines will function normally,” he added.
Although the patient had regained consciousness after the operation, neither he nor his family members were willing to talk to the media.
The doctor gave a possible explanation for their withdrawal.
