India sees highest Covid cases in 236 days; experts blame new variant

The active Covid infections in India rose to 49,622 with 11,109 new cases reported today. This is the highest daily count in over seven months, as per the data from the Union health ministry.

The country also saw 29 deaths, taking the total fatalities to 5,31,064. The data showed that Delhi and Rajasthan had three deaths each, while Chhattisgarh and Punjab had two each.

The other states that reported one death each were Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh ,Maharastra, Odisha, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Kerala also reconciled nine deaths.

Medical experts have suggested that the new XBB.1.16 variant of the virus may be behind the surge in cases. However, they advised people not to panic and follow Covid norms and get their booster doses.

They also said that some people may be testing positive for Covid when they actually have influenza virus infection with similar symptoms.

The ICMR has said that the Influenza A sub-type H3N2 is causing more influenza cases and hospitalisation. The symptoms include fever, cough and runny nose.
