N. Korea launches advanced agricultural weather app with village-level precision

North Korea has released “Agricultural Weather 2.0,” a mobile app providing detailed weather information down to the village level for farmers across the country.

According to a copy of the app obtained by Daily NK, it offers comprehensive agricultural weather data, including disaster alerts and weather notifications specific to farming needs.

The app’s core features allow users to access village-specific weather observations and predictions, specialized agricultural weather data, climate information, and real-time weather disaster alerts.

Users can access local data by selecting their region through the app’s observation and prediction location settings. While observation data is available at the county level, prediction data is more granular, reaching down to individual villages and neighborhoods.

The app presents a wide range of data through various visualizations, including weather predictions, notifications, and astronomical information. Users can view weather patterns through graphs spanning 1-day, 10-day, and 1-month periods, along with distribution charts showing temperature, precipitation, sunshine duration, humidity, and wind conditions.

However, the app comes with notable restrictions. Users must purchase a location-specific product key tied to their device’s IMEI number. This key becomes invalid if users attempt to access weather data from restricted regions or change their registered county location. While changing villages within an approved county is allowed, switching counties requires purchasing a new product key.

According to the app’s instructions, users can purchase six-month or 12-month product keys through the national “Weather Information” homepage or other authorized service providers.

The app also includes a detailed glossary of weather terminology. For instance, it defines “torrential downfall” as rainfall exceeding 30 millimeters per hour or 50 millimeters within three hours. “Much rain” refers to daily rainfall of 100 millimeters or more, while “strong wind” is defined as sustained winds averaging over 10 meters per second for 10 minutes.
