North Korea’s Central Committee recently conducted an emergency inspection of Potonggang Seafood Shop’s operations in Pyongyang, Daily NK has learned.
“The Central Committee sent officials to inspect Potonggang Seafood Shop earlier this month, aiming to revitalize ideological determination among the market’s workers and staff,” a source in Pyongyang told Daily NK recently.
According to the source, the Central Committee noted that while Potonggang Seafood Shop might appear to be functioning properly on the surface, the inspection revealed that the market had failed to change, develop, and improve as directed by the party.
The Central Committee took particular issue with the market workers’ lack of initiative in securing seafood supplies.
“Potonggang Seafood Shop doesn’t procure products independently but instead waits for state provisions, which reflects an outdated mindset,” the source said. “This demonstrates that workers lack the ideological determination to fulfill the party’s revolutionary line.”
The Central Committee added that this indicated they “lack the work attitude required of service sector employees.”
“Relying solely on state provisions to acquire supplies for your shop is unacceptable for workers in this era,” the Central Committee stated. “Workers should be actively seeking out seafood supplies for the market.”
As a follow-up measure, officials from Pyongyang’s party committee visited Potonggang Seafood Shop on March 13 to provide guidance.
The Pyongyang party officials convened a general meeting with the market’s staff and inspected operations focused on implementing the shop’s first-quarter plans, with the goal of improving the fundamental operations of markets that supply seafood to the public.
“The Central Committee and Pyongyang party inspections of Potonggang Seafood Shop have energized other seafood shops across Pyongyang,” the source said. “Party committees in Pyongyang with seafood markets are now conducting an inspection of their implementation of first-quarter plans and overall operations.”
