Advance delegation paves way for Taiwan at Asian Games

A Taiwan delegation arrived in Japan’s Aichi prefecture June 14 for a seven-day visit as part of government efforts to coordinate logistical support for the national team ahead of the 2026 Asian Games to be held in Nagoya.

According to the Ministry of Education, the delegation comprised members from the ministry’s Sports Administration, Taipei City-based Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, and Kaohsiung City-based National Sports Training Center and Taiwan Institute of Sports Science. SA Director-General Cheng Shih-chung touched down in Japan June 15 and joined the group in calling on related local agencies the following day.

The first stop was the upcoming event’s organizing committee, where they met with Toru Kobayashi, who is also part of Japan’s national Olympic committee. Kobayashi praised Taiwan for being proactive, noting that it is the first to conduct a formal visit to the committee.

Cheng and the contingent then met with Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa to request the city’s assistance arranging accommodation, physical therapy, training and transportation for Taiwan’s athletes. He also took the opportunity to discuss diversifying and expanding future bilateral exchanges.

In response, Hirosawa said that Taiwan and Japan enjoy a deep bond. He vowed that the city government would make the best possible preparations for the competition and expressed hope that the event would reinforce mutual sports cooperation.

During the delegation’s meeting with Aichi Governor Hideaki Ōmura, Cheng emphasized President Lai Ching-te’s commitment to Taiwan’s sports development, citing the establishment of the Ministry of Sports, set to be inaugurated Sept. 9. Ōmura conveyed good wishes for Taiwan’s exceptional performance in the forthcoming games. (POC-E)
