Eight people have reportedly been killed and dozens more injured by a car blast in a densely populated area of India’s capital, New Delhi, on Monday. The incident took place outside the Red Fort metro station at about 7pm local time during the evening rush hour, according to local media reports.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a “huge fireball” and a “very loud” explosion that led to many nearby vehicles also catching fire. News outlet NDTV has reported that the vehicle that exploded was parked outside Gate No. 1 of the metro station.

Emergency services have cordoned off the area while the injured people have been taken to nearby hospitals, NDTV has said. At least 20 fire trucks are said to be working at the scene. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blast.
