Taiwan and the EU signed an administrative arrangement to mutually recognize variety rights verification reports for Phalaenopsis and Oncidium orchids Feb. 24 in Taipei City.
It was signed by Yao Shih-yuan, director general of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agriculture and Food Agency, and Francesco Mattina, president of the EU’s Community Plant Variety Office. Deputy Agriculture Minister Hu Chung-yi and Christoph Saurenbach, head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan’s trade section, attended the ceremony as witnesses.
According to the MOA, under the pact, Taiwan’s breeders can use the origin variety distinctness, uniformity and stability report issued by the MOA to apply for variety rights in the EU, removing the need for repeated testing. The ministry added that the pact symbolizes a new height of Taiwan-EU economic and trade relations and will help domestic dancing doll and moth orchid growers expand into the European market.
Taiwan began to cooperate with the EU on plant variety rights protection in 2016 and inked an administrative arrangement on the mutual recognition of examination results for moth orchids in 2019, which was later renewed in 2023, the MOA noted. The current pact further includes dancing doll orchids to meet the demands of the local Oncidium industry, the ministry said, adding that it will secure Taiwan’s key position in the international orchid supply chains.
The ministry is committed to expanding the arrangement to other crops with export potential, the MOA said, adding that it will ensure Taiwanese breeders receive protection and benefits in the global market while enabling them to explore overseas agricultural business opportunities. (YCH-E)
