Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei March 19.

Chen first thanked the CTOT for connecting Taiwan and Canada over the past four decades and facilitating bilateral cooperation in culture, education, technology and trade. Taiwan and Canada both value democracy, diversity and the rule of law, he said, adding that Taiwan looks forward to continued collaboration in key areas such as artificial intelligence, green energy and semiconductors.

Marie-Louise Hannan, executive director of the CTOT, said Taiwan and Canada have deep cultural and social links. She described the early connection forged by Canadian missionary George Leslie Mackay, who arrived 150 years ago and founded schools, churches and hospitals across northern Taiwan, and said more than 60,000 Canadians now reside in Taiwan.

The executive director noted that the office has worked closely with Taiwanese partners over the past 40 years and achieved remarkable milestones in aviation, energy and Indigenous affairs, and concluded by citing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent remarks that middle powers must act together to create a third path with impact.

The MOFA said it looks forward to continuing to deepen the Taiwan-Canada partnership based on existing friendly cooperation by working together to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. (YCH-E)
