Deputy FM Chen gives interview to Foreign Policy

HomeUpdatesDeputy FM Chen gives interview to Foreign Policy
Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi said that Taiwan is determined to safeguard its security by increasing its capacity for self-defense.

Chen made the remarks during an interview with a journalist from Foreign Policy in Taipei City for “How Taiwan Sees the World,” an article published Feb. 11 on the U.S. magazine’s website.

The deputy minister asserted that deeds are more important than words in a response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to shift toward deconfliction with China as stated in the U.S. National Defense Strategy. He pointed out that Trump’s approval of the US$11 billion arms sales to Taiwan last December and the signing of a trade deal in January both demonstrate the U.S. government’s commitment to Taiwan’s security.

Chen went on to say that the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in such areas as critical minerals, drones and technology supply chains at the sixth U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue in January. He also said that Taiwan was important before the development of semiconductors on the strength of its geography and democratic governance.

Regarding U.S. action in Venezuela, Chen said it sent a strong signal to China that the U.S. is willing to use military means to achieve diplomatic goals. The deputy minister further said that passing the US$40 billion defense budget before the Legislature is a strong, important gesture to show Taiwan’s emphasis on its self-defense.

Taiwan is deepening cooperation with regional neighbors Japan and the Philippines, Chen said, and concluded by raising a question for the countries seeking deeper collaboration with China: Can Chinese leader Xi Jinping be trusted? (YCH-E)
